Terrific addition to dining in the BF-Walpole area. I usually order from the specials menu and everything I've had has been creative, well prepared, and very high quality. Can it get any better? Service is also good. Now I just need to go back for some drinks on the back patio!

Not very good food and a bit pricey. We got a burger and pizza. Both were bland and needed seasoning. The burger was dry and small with a minuscule amount of gorgonzola for an added $2.00. If you want a great burger go to Shona's Grill down the street.

This is one of my local go-to restaurants. Really good food. They always have interesting dishes for specials. I have never been disappointed. Love the pizza! Wait staff is friendly and helpful.

Great food, great service, great friends...every time we visit Popolo. Period. Thank you for being a wonderful and necessary part of Bellows Falls!

Two stars for your male server who thought it acceptable to give me the NON-detailed tab for my review and payment for a meal costing nearly $200. Who does this?

It's really the only place to eat a decent meal in the town. The waitress was fantastic and she alerted us to the fact that the building actually had a train track underneath! That was super cool (I think more towns should invest in that). She also let us know a lot about the history of the building. The upstairs (an old hotel) the ballroom (still a lot like the original), it was super neat. I think they'd make a ton on tours of the upstairs as this piqued all of our interests to see it. The meal was okay, not hugely notable. Very limited menu. It was expensive for three people in a small town with no drinks at $100 Appetizers Fried artichoke hearts - (not crispy, just oily) Calamari - I didn't have this. Calamari has too many bad reports about it being pig anus. Can't do it. Dinners- Pork chop - bone in. Not a lot of meat for big eaters. Great for gluten free people. Wonder burger - I had this, no cheese, bacon added. It was a burger. It was prepared correctly so they get points. But nothing notable about it. Cast Iron Rib Eye-cooked a little to much but okay. The ambience of the restaurant is very low light romantic. It was good. I would go back.

I love this place. The specials ARE special and worth getting. Recently I had a great swordfish entrée with an olive tapenade on chic peas followed by a strawberry shortcake done right... fresh strawberries, warm biscuit and whipped cream. A favorite salad is the blue cheese. But all of the salads are excellent. They have a way with dressings. The staff is friendly, attentive and welcoming. Call for a reservation since they get busy, especially from 6-7 pm. Try for a bit earlier or later.

Excellent dinner, appetizers were great to share before entrees. Service was attentive but not hovering, Portion size: perfect. Only short coming is small menu. Would perhaps be limiting if visiting frequently. Daily specials are nice addition but main menu could use a few more options.

Had Sunday brunch here today. The service was excellent, the food delicious and the chef accommodated us with making the special breakfast pizza, even though it wasn't on the menu. Sometimes it can be noisy in the restaurant, but it was just right in there today.

The food is just fabulous- I love the calamari, pizza and a great burger. There is always a creative and delicious special. Drinks and cocktails are always special

We ate at popolo last Saturday night and I would really like to rate the place higher but I just can't Overall food was great but our friendly but terribly un professional waitress just brought the meal experience down She asked us what wine we would like to order we chose and she said the owner thought that it was a great choice. A few minutes later she came back and said they didn't have that wine, fair enough. So I asked if any of the other whites were available by the glass and she said yes and could give us a small taste of two other choices, great We chose one and she comes back to the table with an opened bottle and says this was just opened at the bar (for our test) and asks us to accept the already opened elsewhere bottle. Now this just isn't done, if they offer this by the glass than this is the bar bottle not ours. For $38 they can bring a bottle to the table and open it up. I said OK this is bellows falls not nyc. .. But then she just plunks the bottle on the table and walks away. Not serving a drop.... I mean come on ..do the owners train these people? Good food and lousy service..... Will i go back, yes, but if the service is the same then shame on the owners.....

Oooooh Yeah! Excellent food, great staff. Many fresh local foods used and you could tell! A strawberry rhubarb margarita if you can believe it! Flank steak was a little tough but the broccoli raab was to die for! So diverse! Come and enjoy. We sat out side on the deck it was casual yet you still felt as if you were eating at a high end restaurant. Simple class act.

We went out to Popolo last night for dinner. The restaurant was full, but no one was waiting. Our Waiter was relaxed and helpful. Some people have commented that the place is noisy but we did not find it so. The dining area was open and airy, but not cold and it was a miserable Vermont night. We had the Calamari and Mussels for apps. Both were good. The Calamari was tender and tasty and the broth for the Mussels a delicious spicy tomato base. We shared a Gorgonzola salad. It tasted good but the presentation was uninspired. For dinner -- the special steak with a red wine reduction. I am not a hunk of steak fan generally, but this was cooked well, tender and the reduction was delicious. The Green Mountain Burger which my son says is as good as any he has had in Vermont and I would agree. The fries were also very good. The Pollo Saltimbocca -- I liked to pairing of flavors on the dish; swiss chard, gnocchi cakes and the chicken and prosciutto all worked well together. The selection of beers on tap is small but they are all winners. Our takeaway is that Popolo and Bellows Falls are well worth visit.

The food here was wicked yummy. Had the calamari at lunch time. Our server was great but she was the only one on and the restaurant filled with guests shortly after we arrived. It was difficult for her to keep up with the amount of people but she did well. The atmosphere was very nice. It was an enjoyable lunch time stop and I would love to go again and try something else. Great environment and fairly affordable!

Started with mozzarella fritters stuffed with mozz. and ricotta cheese. Lightly coated with, I think corn meal, and some smokey spice. Second course was hanger steak with greens and house made gnocchi. Nice char on the steak and gnocchi done to perfection. Bambolini for dessert = fried dough goodness with custard inside.

Maybe because it's been awhile since I've had truly fresh Italian food out, or that it was due to eating out with two close friends, but Popolo's proved a really fun, refreshing surprise! Situated in downtown Bellows Falls, it's arguably the classiest place in the whole town but not so much that it wards people off but rather invites you in. The simple yet crisp, modern wood décor and bright wall space certainly helps alongside a generous bar serving Trapp Family seasonal brews and other tasty regional beers and no small cocktail list. Then, there is the food! I don't think I've had calamari so tender, especially with a light picante taste with the most subtle chile flavor on the outside coating. Fresh, basil-seasoned olive oil with rye bread helped whet appetites until our main courses came, including a Parma pizza topped with mozzarella cheese, prosciutto, arugula pesto, San Marzano tomato sauce, and black olives. Strikingly crisp yet tender pizza dough worked its rounds, as we finished off the whole pie. Even the dessert stepped up a couple notches, with offerings of tiramisu, gelato, and my order of pannacotta which were subtly sweet in the best way without being overwhelming. Definitely worth a drop through should you come by Bellows Falls in the evening...:-)

While BF needs a decent downtown restaurant, Popolos doesn't cut it yet. The staff, especially the front end, is unhelpful and unwelcoming. The air of pretension doesn't fit the town. While we have had a decent lunch here, dinner is so so and takes far too long to arrive. Communal tables are ridiculous and a waste of space. Let's hope they grow up a bit!

What happened to Popolo? We fell in love with Popolo. Great food at great prices. We went at least six times and then this weekend something happened. It was really off. Food was nothing like the first six times. What a disappointment. Hope they get it together!

Dinner here was ok. The service was very friendly, the menu had great options and a good wine list. My husband had a chicken with prosciutto dish, and I had a salad with chicken added. Both chickens were very dry. The other strange thing was that our server mentioned each and every price on the specials, which was strange. I also asked for chicken to be added to my salad and she stood there a little awkwardly trying to recall the add-chicken price. The obsessive price listing seems a bit tacky. Other than those two things, the place is good for what the area offers and we would still return.

Andrea and I have been coming here for the brunch from time to time recently. We'd been up once or twice last year and liked the food but had trouble enjoying the restaurant because of the noise--the elegant ceiling unfortunately was a really strong reflector for sound, so you could barely hear the person across the table from you. Fortunately sometime in the past year they put in some sound baffles on the ceiling. I wouldn't say that the problem is entirely cured, but it's a _lot_ better than it was. We've had two pleasant brunches here. Service has been impeccable. Andrea's gone for various lox options both times--they have a variety of gravlax that they make on the premises that is apparently very good (I haven't tried it, 'cuz I don't like fish). I've had the pancakes and scrambled eggs both times. These are very generous and filling and decadently yummy. The pancakes come with Vermont maple syrup (you'd think this was a given, but even in Vermont it's not). I had the hash browns on our most recent visit; these are actually threads of grated potato deep-fried in some kind of fixture so that they come out looking like birds' nests, with a soft potato center and crispy bits sticking out like straw. Pretty yummy. There's a lot of variety on the menu; next time I go I really need to try something other than pancakes. We also went here for dinner a couple of months ago and were seated in a room off the main room, which looked a little like a hotel lobby that had been converted into a dining room, complete with a fireplace. This was a really nice, intimate setting, a perfect date setting. If you can get seated in this room, it's very nice.

Walked into the restaurant at 6pm looking for a table on a quiet night and we were told that our small party of 3 couldn't be seated because we didn't have a reservation. Fair enough excuse for a packed-to-the-brim restaurant, but considering the place was half-empty, the hostess didn't have to be rude about it. My takeaway? Even if the place looks half-empty from outside, don't ever assume you can get a table here without calling in advance. I guess you gotta be VIP to eat here?

My wife and I stopped for lunch on Black Friday. It wasn't busy, but what a great setting! The farm style furniture and large window looking onto Main Street is an ideal way to spend an hour. I had a pork belly sandwich, it was delicious. My wife had a salad and soup. Good stuff.

We've gone to the old movies at the BF Opera House and have been intrigued by seeing Popolo across the street. Tonight we finally stopped in and are happy we did. The menu is much more extensive than the usual (basically a whole page of antipasti, plus appetizers, entrees, etc.) and very reasonably priced. Expect entrees to be $12-20, with the obligatory $10 burger hiding in there as well. I had the burger, which was very tasty and came with excellent fries. She had the pomodoro and I was a bit jealous, since it smelled so deliciously garlicky. One last thing I loved about the place was that the sink in the bathroom was at the perfect height. Call me weird but I really love it when restaurants think about this--nice not to have to stoop or bend down to wash hands.

My husband and I headed north from Amherst looking for the quintessential Vermont experience on my birthday. My birthday requirements: someplace for lunch not far off I-91, outside seating, preferably overlooking water, good fresh farm to table food, situated in a quaint but not too postcard-y New England town, maybe some antiquing thrown in, and farmstands en route. Scored five out of six on the birthday wishes. Washed out on the sitting outside part since it was raining today. So how was the birthday? We discovered Bellows Falls because I thought it was the name of the "It's a Wonderful Life" town. Wrong, but I was close. The movie town was Bedford Falls. Bellows Falls, VT is a river town, a railroad town, a former prosperous mill town that is undergoing a transformation of its many Victorian buildings. It has a real town center. Popolo ("the people") Restaurant is a bright, architecturally interesting, renovated space smack in the middle of that center. The setting was so inviting on this gray day--pale yellow walls, tall ceilings, original brick backdrop for the bar, clean-cut wooden tables and booths, modern glass pendant lighting that I would put in my own kitchen if I had the umpteen foot ceilings that Popolo's has. The back patio overlooks water, so we'll have to go back for that experience when it's sunny. The menu met my other requirement, fresh food prepared simply--just like in Italy. Since it was my birthday, we started with a drink: lemoncello Prosseco--I know, I know, a summer drink, but I had to have it. They have a wonderful wine list, but we had the hour drive home in the rain, so we passed on wine. We both ordered the special lentil soup to start, which really had that fall-is-coming flavor and warmth. My husband ordered one of Popolo's enticing hot paninis--meatball, which he loved. I savored Popolo's special pizza of the day topped with feta, lemon, arugula and my favorite kind of slightly charred, crispy, yeasty crust. We were too full to try the house gelatos. We plan to have a next time very soon. Afterwards we strolled in the rain through the town, stopping at the best antiques' shop I've visited in New England, directly across the street from Popolo's, the Windham Antique Center. It's beautifully curated, but not one of those fussy, formal places that make you want to make a fast exit. I spent a half hour in there, tempted by so many things. Another time. So a very good birthday was had by me and the guy who dun brung me. I definitely won't wait a year for another visit to Bellow's Falls and a meal at Popolo's.

Love this place, the atmosphere is airy and pleasant, the staff friendly and the food delicious. The burger is wonderful, and the bacon on the burger is fabulous. The wine list is small but well chosen and moderate in cost .. On a previous visit I had a pizza and that was excellent. All the ingredients here are fresh and the dishes nicely presented.

Very good Italian food. Great value for lunch. Hot sandwiches are well worth the $7. The bread is excellent. They serve a locally-made gelato and use a lot of local ingredients. The house-made meatballs are good. They have a few interesting cocktails and some good beers on tap. Service can be a bit erratic. Your water may not be filled frequently, and you may end up forkless after your appetizer is taken away. But staff are very friendly.

Popolo's has the ambiance of an elementary school cafeteria and probably MORE noise.......which is a shame because the food is fairly good......... it is also very expensive for what it is.......we would love to see more businesses happening in bellow's falls and we think the owner has good intentions.......but he has to make this into a more pleasant dining experience for it to succeed beyond this year........

Terrific, refined farm-to-plate Italian cuisine - remarkable for this area. Staff is very friendly and will gladly take you through the menu and make recommendations depending on your interests. Wine list, though I don't drink anymore, is a fascinating collection of bottles you will not find in the average wine store.

The food was pretty good, but it was SO LOUD!!!!! I was sitting at a small 2 person table and we had to lean in and shout to hear eachother, I left with a headache

I wanted this to be a little bit better than it was for the prices they charged. Food was good. Quite good for BF. But they came to our table twice to tell us they were out of elements for dinners we ordered. The wait staff was friendly and helpful. Service a little slow. Super nice ambiance. I'd definitely go back but based on this first experience I was slightly underwhelmed.

Popolo is a wonderful addition to bellows falls, vt. I love that is has more of a modern feel but is still warm and welcoming. The food And drinks are outstanding. Try the roasted chicken served with polenta! Great place for a night out with friends or a romantic date. Be sure to make reservations on the weekends because it gets booked! The staff know the menu very well and are more than happy to answer any questions. They also have a fabulous brunch on Sundays. You will not be disappointed!

I have to say that for my first and probably last experience with Popolo I was not very impressed. We did not have a reservation, waited for 15 minutes for a very small table for two. Had slow service. It was loud in the restaurant. Food was okay. Bread was served with seasoned oil. We ordered specials and the prices were not mentioned. I would not have ordered what I did if I had known the price. I had an heirloom tomato salad with 8 slices of a medium sized tomato, pesto oil drizzle and a small teaspoon of some soft cheese - $12. Then I had the Farro risotto, which was good and filling, but not great. I'm glad the waitress explained that it was not going to be creamy like other risottos. My husband had a peppered steak, one small red potato with Gorgonzola cheese that was cut into 3 pieces and some sautéed peppers. Had he known that it was $34 he would have gotten the $12 hamburger. It looked like it was the better deal. The restaurant was more like a tavern experience rather than an upscale restaurant. I would not recommend going here again to anyone looking for a good deal. The prices certainly don't apply to the majority of the population of Bellows Falls. While the food was good, it was priced unreasonably high for what you get in portion size.

I had the pizza special. It was prosciutto and something else. Can't remember. It was amazing though! The ambiance, setting, and lighting are also amazing. Happy, positive, buzzing with good people.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
